Press Release

Large coalition of citizens, businesses and organizations from across the County oppose the harmful and costly Maui County Voter Initiative

After SHAKA placed the initiative on the ballot, the seed companies, large and small farmers, scientists, economists, University of Hawaii professors, medical professionals, businesses, labor unions, senior organizations, and citizens from all over Maui County came together to inform voters about how poorly written the initiative is and how it would create real harm to the County, its agriculture, its economy and its taxpayers. The citizens committee that formed now has over 5,500 members who are committed to defeating this dangerous and costly initiative.

This is the first time the citizens of Maui County have faced such a measure, so it is important that all voters understand the risks and consequences of this harmful initiative. Furthermore, due to the way the initiative was written, it’s possible for voters to be misled into thinking the initiative is something other than what it really is – a ban on certain types of agriculture in the County. Voters also deserve to be thoroughly informed that, unlike with state ballot measures, if one wants to vote NO on the Maui initiative, the voter has to fill in the vote NO box, rather than leaving it blank. Therefore, a robust, broad-based campaign was required to inform voters about the real meaning of the initiative, its threats to Maui citizens and how to properly cast their votes against it.

Providing the voters with factual information requires substantial resources — millions of dollars to purchase television, online and radio time, newspaper space and mail, which the seed companies have contributed to the campaign. They obviously have a tremendous stake in the outcome, and their hundreds of hard working employees have an even greater stake because they and their families face the hardships that come with the job loss this initiative would force.

It is also important to know that other than the professional campaign staff, the Maui citizens who have been speaking out on this initiative in advertisements, and mail, and group meetings, and letters to the editor, and phone calls, and personal meetings, and sign waving are not being compensated for their efforts. They simply recognize that this deceptive initiative would force the complete shutdown of many farms that have operated on Maui and Molokai for decades, without any scientific justification, and would eliminate over 650 well-paying jobs, creating a devastating ripple effect throughout the local economy.
